Our Commitment to Sustainability

  • Reducing fuel consumption - By ordering no more than once a week from those suppliers which provide highly perishable products we are able to minimise supplier fuel consumption.

  • Reducing Packaging - We minimise the number of mail deliveries by ordering larger quantities to reduce fuel consumption and packaging. All suppliers use environmentally friendly packaging or reuse old packaging.

  • Plastic Wrapping - When we receive our products we ask that none of our products are plastic wrapped .

    • Non Food Products - We do not receive any non food products wrapped in plastic. Where this has occurred with a new supplier, we have either requested they find alternatives or we find a new supplier

    • Food Products - Due to health regulations, we do receive food products in plastic which is unavoidable, and we recycle this correctly.???

Furniture & Equipment

When fitting out The Hub majority of the furniture, apart from that which had to be custom made to house the tubs, was secondhand including the tables, benches, baskets, commercial sink and bench and display shelves. Although we did purchase our first set of tubs and scoops new, all additions have been purchased secondhand, and this is a practice we will continue to do.

Purchasing secondhand saved the furniture and equipment from going to landfill and did not use any more resources or energy to create new furniture. We continue to purchase furniture and equipment secondhand wherever possible. New, is not our first choice.

Any offcuts from the custom made shelves has been used to create more shelves within the shop and no timber has made it to landfill, as ever the small offcuts have been used as brackets.

At The Hub we are committed to ensuring that not only do we provide an our customers with an environmentally friendly shopping experience but that we minimise our environmental impact behind the scenes as well.

Below is some of the work we are doing behind the scenes, however this is something we are continually working and improving on.

We’ve got this together.

Cardboard

No cardboard received at The Hub goes to landfill. The boxes are: available for use by our customers; we reuse them in the shop or we personally take them to be recycled on our way home to reduce fossil fuel usage.

We also reduce the amount of cardboard we receive by purchasing products in larger quantities.

Unfortunately we do end up with some ripped and unusable paper bags in the shop. Instead of going to landfill however, we shred them and use them as packing for our hampers.

We also do this with any brown paper packaging that comes with deliveries.

Paper Bags

Due to health regulations, we do have to wash items on a daily basis. We do have large sinks out the back to make washing the tubs easier however, minimum water is used.

To wash our smaller items, such as scoops and spoons, we place a small bucket within the sink so less water is used.

Water

We only use the products we stock in store for cleaning so they are all environmentally friendly. All liquids are dispensed in pump or spray bottles to minimise product usage.

All of our cloths and scrubbers are environmentally friendly and are placed in our home compost.

Cleaning

Mobile

We have all our phone & internet services with a provider who focus is on recycling. Currently 95% of their waste avoids the landfill, with a target for 98% by 2025.

Coffee Beans

Waste Free from Supplier to Home

Our coffee beans are roasted and delivered to The Hub every week in tubs. These tubs are collected by the supplier and reused for our delivery the following week.

Bring in your own container and your coffee beans will be waste free from supplier to home.

Our wonderful range of kitchen cloths are provided to us without packaging.

The supplier originally provided the cloths individually wrapped, however after discussions, the supplier removed the individual cloth wrapper and we can not buy them completely wrapper free.

Kitchen Cloths

Eggs

Waste Free from Supplier to Home

Our wonderful supplier only has 75 chickens per hectare and undertakes in regenerative faming practices and deliver eggs to us fresh weekly in refillable trays.

Bring in your own carton and your eggs will be waste free from supplier to home. However if you do get a carton from us, they are all made from recycled egg carton.

We use an electrician where for every job we complete, 3 trees are planted through Carbon Neutrals plant a tree program to help protect and restore forests and wildlife, the trees will be planted in the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor, north of Perth.

The program aims to restore the natural landscape and reconnect habitats by linking small patches of remaining vegetation to create a 200km corridor from inland to the coast.
